Behind Donna Speziatta’s Holiday Campaign: Craftsmanship and Elegance Unwrapped
Share
Introduction:
There’s a story woven into every piece of lingerie we create – a story of design, dedication, and a dash of holiday magic. For our Donna Speziatta Holiday Campaign, we set out to craft more than just beautiful images; we wanted to capture the soul of our brand during the most enchanting time of year. The result? A campaign that marries craftsmanship with festivity, and elegance with empowerment.
In this exclusive behind-the-scenes peek, we’re “unwrapping” the holiday campaign – sharing the muse behind it, the artisanal process that brought it to life, and the little details that you might not notice at first glance but are the heartbeat of our work. If you’ve ever been curious about what goes into creating that luxe photoshoot or launching a holiday collection, settle in with a warm drink. Here’s the inside story, from our studio in Italy to the pages of our lookbook and screens of our audience.
Inspiration: Winter’s Muse and Timeless Glamour
When conceptualizing the holiday campaign, our creative director posed a question: “What does a Donna Speziatta holiday feel like?” Not look – feel. The answers that echoed around the team: Warmth. Allure. A touch of magic. Sophistication. A coming together of past and present.
We drew a lot of inspiration from classic Italian winters – imagine walking down a cobbled street in Milan, festive lights strung between old buildings, the smell of roasted chestnuts in the air. There’s an inherent romance to that imagery. Our founder, who started this brand in a Milan atelier, shared stories of her childhood holidays: velvet dresses, her Nonna’s lace tablecloths, midnight mass lit by candles, the opera on New Year’s Eve with everyone dressed to the nines. Those personal anecdotes became creative fuel.
Thus, the campaign moodboard filled with images of: Caravaggio paintings (for dramatic light and shadow), vintage photographs of Sophia Loren trimming a Christmas tree (glamour and playfulness), close-ups of Baroque architectural details (to inspire lace motifs perhaps), and nature – frost on a window, deep red poinsettias, golden sun on a short winter day.
We wanted the campaign to evoke that the collection is “a love letter to timeless Italian glamour, brought to life by skilled artisans” – one of our guiding mottos. Holiday was the perfect time to literally bring that to life, since glamour and artisanship are on full display.
The Atelier: Crafting the Collection
While the marketing and visual team were dreaming up the shoot, our design and production teams were hard at work on the actual holiday collection. Here’s something not everyone knows: designing lingerie for a holiday launch starts way back in spring or early summer. Yes, while most folks are at the beach, we’re finalizing velvets and laces for December!
Our Italian ateliers hum with activity year-round, but there’s a special buzz when a holiday piece is in the making. One example is our showpiece for the season: a limited edition corset adorned with over a hundred hand-placed Swarovski crystals. We sourced a particular French Leavers lace for it that had a pattern reminiscent of winter vines or snow-laden branches. The lace itself came in undyed (a soft ivory) and we decided to keep it that color to showcase its purity and detail.
Each corset took hours of hand-finishing. Our skilled artisans (the same who construct our regular line pieces) were both excited and challenged – adding crystals meant new techniques to ensure they were secure and evenly spaced. One artisan joked that it was like decorating a gingerbread house, meticulously placing each gem as if it were a sugar decoration. But she did it with needle and thread under a special magnifying lamp, not icing!
Another hero piece, the emerald bodysuit I mentioned earlier (“Enchanted Emerald”), went through several prototypes to get the embroidery just right. We wanted the gold threads to catch the light in a subtle, not gaudy way. Our embroidery partner, a family-run workshop in northern Italy, tested various goldwork threads – some were too bright (almost brassy), some too dull. We landed on one with a faint patina, an antique gold that looked like it could’ve been embroidered on a Renaissance gown. The patterns they embroidered were actually inspired by a motif in a cathedral floor tile in Florence (art and history find their way into fashion in sneaky ways).
Then there’s the matter of ethics and quality, always a part of our story. All this time, we are mindful that our artisans are working overtime, so we stagger production, bring on seasonal helpers (trained under the masters), and ensure everyone is fairly compensated and often enjoying the process. We truly operate like a little holiday workshop (hold the elves, insert skilled seamstresses). “We take pride in ethical production, ensuring our fabrics are sustainably sourced and our partners are paid fairly for their exceptional work,” as our story goes – this campaign was a chance to reaffirm that.
The Photoshoot: Lights, Lace, Action!
Our campaign shoot took place over two days in early September (yes, Christmas came early). We chose Villa Aurelia, an 17th-century villa in Rome, as our location. Its grand interiors – frescoed ceilings, marble floors, and a view of the city – offered the perfect backdrop, mixing heritage with holiday grandeur. We brought in festive elements: a towering fir tree for the main salon, which we decorated in a single afternoon (with our pieces hanging as ornaments for a playful shot); candelabras and garlands for a dining room scene to capture that intimate holiday dinner vibe; and piles of beautifully wrapped gifts in Donna Speziatta signature wrapping (black paper, gold ribbon) to pepper throughout.
Our models were of diverse backgrounds but all exuded that Donna Speziatta woman essence: confidence, warmth, a hint of mystery. It was important to us to convey that our brand is about empowerment and confidence – “celebrates the special woman in every one of us”. On set, this meant encouraging the models to infuse their own personality. In one scene, a model wearing the longline satin set was asked to imagine she’s writing a love letter at the vanity (she actually scribbled something in Italian which ended up being a thank you note to the crew – sweet!). Another model in the cozy cashmere set danced lightly to a jazz carol playing – creating a candid shot we later used of her laughing, mid-twirl, tree lights behind her.
The lighting was critical. We wanted that chiaroscuro effect – pockets of light amidst shadows, like how a room feels with only tree lights and a fireplace. Our photographer used a mix of natural light (soft morning sun through the villa windows) and lots of candles + some cleverly hidden LED lights to mimic candle glow around the set. The result? A warm, golden tone to everything. You can see the sheen on the silk, the sparkles of the embroidery, and the softness of skin – it feels inviting.
A behind-the-scenes tidbit: one shot in the final campaign shows a close-up of a model’s back as she’s lacing up the corset, with a blur of a mirror reflecting her smile. To get that, our photographer actually stood on a ladder and shot downwards, while a stylist crouched out of frame tightening the ribbon and the model pretended to do it herself. It took many tries to get the focus and composition just right (and lots of jokes about how many people it takes to tie a bow). But that image ended up symbolizing the whole idea of “behind the scenes” elegantly.
The Message: Unwrapping Confidence and Joy
Beyond the visuals, our holiday campaign has a message we hope resonates: it’s about embracing one’s inner elegance and confidence, especially during a season that’s about giving and togetherness. We deliberately included shots of models smiling, interacting (toasting with champagne, helping each other adjust straps like friends getting ready together) – to show that lingerie isn’t just about seduction or solitude, it can be about joy, friendship, celebration of self.
We also weaved in subtle nods to female empowerment. One image mirrors a part of our brand story: a model stands by a window, looking out at the morning light in her silk robe, an expression of calm self-assurance on her face, with the caption in our lookbook reading: “She crafted her own story, stitching together dreams in silk and lace.” This parallels our founder’s journey of turning a dream in a Milan atelier into this brand, and by extension invites our customers to see wearing these pieces as part of crafting their own story of confidence.
Even the campaign title “Elegance Unwrapped” plays on the idea of gifts and layers (physical and metaphorical) – unveiling what’s inside. We hope when someone sees the campaign and then unwraps a Donna Speziatta box for themselves, they feel that sense of occasion and luxury. The tissue paper they’ll fold back reveals not just fine lace but the effort of everyone behind it, from the designer’s sketch to the artisan’s needle to the model’s pose to the customer’s smile. It’s a chain of shared experience, especially poignant at holidays.
Final Reflections
Pulling back the curtain on this holiday campaign, we want our community to feel part of the journey. Many of our loyal customers were as excited for this launch as we were – on social media we shared sneak peeks: a slow video of an artisan sewing on crystals, a poll on which color to release a certain set in, etc. The behind-the-scenes is as much a part of the story as the polished images. It shows our values in action: handcrafted in Italy, finest materials, passion for detail, ethical production – all those things we talk about, here they are, alive in this campaign.
And on a personal note, as someone who’s been writing this and was on set at that shoot: the most fulfilling moment was when our founder looked at the digital gallery mid-shoot, teared up slightly and said, “It’s exactly as I imagined back in that little studio years ago.” For her, seeing the brand’s ethos so intact and shining through in a holiday campaign (often brands dilute or gimmick-ify around the holidays) – it was a dream realized. We even included a small portrait of her and her mother (who taught her to sew) on a side table in one of the shots – an Easter egg of gratitude to where it all began.
Conclusion:
This holiday season, as you browse our lookbook or perhaps indulge in a Donna Speziatta piece, know that you are part of a story – one stitched with love from Italy to wherever you are. We hope the campaign’s images and the lingerie itself bring you joy, make you feel elegant and empowered, and add a sprinkle of magic to your holidays. Because beyond the lace and silk, it’s confidence and elegance we truly aim to tailor for you. Thank you for letting us share the behind-the-scenes of this journey. From all of us at Donna Speziatta, Buone Feste – Happy Holidays – and may you feel as beautiful as you truly are, inside and out.
